Through-Feed Centerless Grinding

Through-feed centerless grinding is often applied in grinding round bars and parts, particularly in the largest outside diameter of the material.

Bars? Tubes? Pistons? These are all achieved by centerless grinding machining solutions with through-feed grinding.

What is Through-Feed Grinding?

Through-feed centerless grinding is one of the most common and effective forms of cylindrical grinding operations. It is typically used in grinding and cutting long bars and tubes, typically used in automotive and engineering applications.

Through-feed grinding is often applied in the grinding of round bars and parts, particularly in the largest outside diameter of the material – a cylindrical process that guarantees an exceptionally high level of economic efficiency and productivity.

Through-feed grinding Process

If the application requires machining and grinding large quantities of long and round and/or thin components and parts, there is no comparable alternative to through-feed centerless grinding. This is why centerless grinding is considered the best technique for performing multiple tasks including polishing and roughing – all done in a single pass!

Through-feed grinding Techniques

Through-feed grinding is performed by tilting the horizontal axis of the regulating wheel. Thus, centerless grinding can efficiently regulate the feed rate of the workpiece during this operation. The workpiece, or bar, is fed into the grinding wheel and the regulating wheel. There is a continuous motion of bars entering one side and flying out of the other. The regulating wheel pulls the workpiece past the grinding wheel which is constantly dressed with abrasive grains.

The grinding machine typically consists of the grinding wheel, regulating wheel, and work blade, making it possible for the whole operation to achieve high levels of productivity and machining efficiency. The work blade supports the bar/ workpiece, holding it in its proper height between the grinding and regulating wheels. The placement of the workpiece and the gap between the wheels is crucial to the diametrical tolerance, straightness, and roundness of the workpiece and having the wheels placed in a controlled gap makes it possible to achieve precision roundness and diameter tolerance with bars and tubes of large sizes and lengths.

The through-feed centerless grinding, however, cannot be used in workpieces that have complicated geometric figures such as gear shafts and camshafts. The through-feed technique is often applied in parts with simple cylindrical shapes including tubes, pistons, piston pins, and bars.
