The various processes applied in centerless grinding make it one of the most reliable and essential grinding operations, greatly advancing the manufacturing of parts.
What is Centerless Grinding?
Centerless grinding is a process of removing material from a workpiece through abrasive cutting. There are two grinding wheels that hold the workpiece over a workholding platform. These wheels rotate at different speeds but with the same direction. Involving a highly thorough process helping to enable, remove, or insert parts of the material within the operation.
Wheels for the Grinding Operation
Two grinding wheels are used to secure the workpiece, a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel. This an essential step during the grinding process to ensure precision.
The Grinding wheel is a stationary wheel that is placed on a fixed axis and rotates with a direct downward force. Responsible for the grinding process, enabling a higher relative speed as it connects with the workpiece.
A Regulating wheel in motion is used for applying pressure to the side of a workpiece. This has a very rough, rubber-like texture to hold the workpiece firmly.
The joint force and speed of these wheels complete the grinding process and determine how to remove the material from the workpiece.
Types of Centerless Grinding
Through – Feed
Through – feed centerless grinding is completely feeding the workpiece to the grinding wheels. This doesn’t require a separate speed mechanism, making it very efficient yet it can only be used for cylindrical – shaped parts. The wheel cannot be dressed to create more complex shapes since this only imparts a horizontal velocity to the workpiece.
End – Feed
End – feed is different form through – feed grinding. The parts are moved in axially between grinding wheels, rested, and then moved out again. To form more complex shapes, the wheel can be dressed but it will only resize the parts into smaller diameters. This grinding operation is best for tapered workpieces.
In – Feed
In – Feed is commonly used for grinding relatively complex shaped parts. The ground surface does not need to be right circular cylinder since the parts are not axially fed to the workpiece due to the complexity of the part shapes and the grinding wheel shapes. The workpiece is manually loaded and the grinding wheel is dressed to accommodate the part.
