Reliable 4142 steel round bar stock for optimum machinability
4142 Alloy bar stock is a medium-carbon steel with chromium and molybdenum added to its chemical composition to serve as strengtheners. The application of 4142 alloy round bar stock is diverse as they are made into forged gears, flangers, collets, arbors, spindles, axles, clutch parts, forming rolls, and other machine tools and components. To help you achieve optimum machinability, 4142 alloy bar stock should be annealed to a structure of coarse pearlite to coarse spheroidite. The steel should be forged at a temperature of around 2150F (1175C) or forged down to a temperature of approximately 1700F (925C) from there the steel should be austenitized at 1550F (845C) and cooled to 1390F (755C) at 25F (14F) per hour prior to its air cooling.
