420 Stainless Round Bar Stock

420 stainless bar stock is not commonly welded due to its air hardening characteristics.

Heat up 420 stainless round bar stock without worry

Martensitic stainless steel that provides good corrosion resistance similar to that of 410 plus is 420 stainless round bar stock that shows an increased strength and hardness as it attains a corrosion resistance at maximum only in the fully hardened condition. Although it is never used in the annealed condition, 420 stainless bar stock is magnetic in both annealed and hardened conditions. Its resistance to corrosion is only apparent in the hardened or hardened and tempered state. With a melting point of 1450 -1510C and a density of 7.75g/cm3, 420 stainless bar stock is not commonly welded due to its air hardening characteristics. But if needed, welding may be performed after preheating to 300 -400F with post-weld tempering for 2 hours. Stainless steels like this can be heated at temperatures from 840 to 900C and slow furnaced cooling at 600C and then air- cooling.
